Supported by 35th Infantry and 4th Armored &#8211; the 6th Armored Division (aka the Super Sixth) covered the eastern\u00a0edge of Bastogne while the 17th Airborne Division formed the battling flank of 11th Armored and 87th Infantry Division&#8217;s western perimeter. In order to\u00a0claw back the\u00a0Bulge from the German&#8217;s, General Patton directed his divisions to\u00a0a rally point at Houffalize in order to link up with General Courtney Hodges\u2019 First Army\u00a0who were at that time advancing from the north and west.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2162\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldwarmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Patton-Shelby-Final-2-waterm--429x600.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.worldwarmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Patton-Shelby-Final-2-waterm--429x600.png 429w, https:\/\/www.worldwarmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Patton-Shelby-Final-2-waterm--768x1073.png 768w, https:\/\/www.worldwarmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Patton-Shelby-Final-2-waterm--733x1024.png 733w, https:\/\/www.worldwarmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Patton-Shelby-Final-2-waterm--1440x2013.png 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During this period, Patton made several scouting trips, mostly under cover of darkness, into the area and officially visited Bastogne twice (30 December 1944 &amp; 7 January 1945)\u00a0primarily to conduct a small number of award ceremonies but also to be briefed by the acting Divisional Commanders.<\/p>\n<p>In late January, twenty-eight year old sergeant James Shelby from the 17th Airborne Divisional Headquarters witnessed \u2018Old Blood and Guts!\u2019 entering the farmhouse CP in Compogne (North of Bastogne) in search of one of his NCOs. Not about to miss\u00a0this golden\u00a0opportunity, Jim\u00a0whipped out his camera and in true &#8220;paparazzi-style&#8221;\u00a0quickly began to\u00a0look\u00a0for a suitable angle. As\u00a0Patton\u00a0came out of\u00a0the building, Shelby was right there to capture the scene with a single click of\u00a0his shutter.\u00a0Clearly surprised by Shelby\u2019s &#8220;off the cuff&#8221; action, Patton walked straight up and stood nose to nose with him.
