Ian Lancaster Fleming\u00a0(28 May 1908\u00a0\u2013 12 August 1964) was an English author, journalist and\u00a0naval intelligence officer\u00a0who is best known for his\u00a0James Bond\u00a0series of\u00a0spy novels. Fleming came from a wealthy family connected to the merchant bank\u00a0Robert Fleming & Co., and his father was the Member of Parliament for\u00a0Henley\u00a0from 1910 until his death on the\u00a0Western Front\u00a0in 1917. Educated at\u00a0Eton,\u00a0Sandhurst\u00a0and, briefly, the universities of\u00a0Munich\u00a0and\u00a0Geneva, Fleming moved through several jobs before he started writing.<\/p>\n

While working for Britain’s\u00a0Naval Intelligence Division\u00a0during the Second World War, Fleming was involved in planning\u00a0Operation Goldeneye\u00a0and in the planning and oversight of two intelligence units,\u00a030 Assault Unit\u00a0and\u00a0T-Force. His wartime service and his career as a journalist provided much of the background, detail and depth of the\u00a0James Bond novels.<\/p>\n

Fleming wrote his first Bond novel,\u00a0Casino Royale, in 1952. It was a success, with three print runs being commissioned to cope with the demand. Eleven Bond novels and two collections of short-stories followed between 1953 and 1966. The novels revolved around\u00a0James Bond, an officer in the Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as\u00a0MI6. Bond was also known by his code number, 007, and was a\u00a0commander\u00a0in the\u00a0Royal Naval Reserve.
