Patton III returned to the village of Bourg\u00a0and paid\u00a0his respects\u00a0to\u00a0the \u2018grave\u2019 of a \u2018national hero.\u2019 <\/b>-by Reg Jans<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Vierkant responsief --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3607132294366157\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"5331534427\"\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nPatton had\u00a0not been here since 1918, when as a colonel, he established a Tank School between Metz and Dijon. \u201cThe place had no shortage of mud, of which there is a magnificent supply\u201d,\u00a0he wrote in his diary (later published by his widow Beatrice in 1947).\u00a0When scouting the area back in 1917, Patton encountered the local mayor, who\u00a0through floods of\u00a0tears\u00a0explained that the Americans had failed to inform him of the death of one of their soldiers. A slightly confused Patton recalled, \u201cBeing unaware of this sad fact, and not liking to admit it to a stranger, I stalled until I found out that no one was dead. However, the\u00a0Frenchman\u00a0insisted that we visit the grave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mayor escorted\u00a0Patton to\u00a0a\u00a0recently\u00a0closed\u00a0latrine pit, neatly\u00a0formed into an oblong shaped earthen mound\u00a0complete with a\u00a0makeshift cross,\u00a0upon which were stenciled the words\u00a0<em>\u2018Abandoned Rear\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0Realizing that the French had inadvertently mistaken\u00a0the\u00a0backfilled lavatory for a provisional\u00a0field grave, Patton, offered his very deepest sympathies\u00a0before\u00a0making\u00a0a rather embarrassed but hasty exit.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty six years later,\u00a0during a nostalgic visit to his former Brigade HQ\u00a0in Bourg, the now legendary General\u00a0was shocked and surprised to see\u00a0that the \u2018grave\u2019, <em>\u201cAbandoned Rear,\u201d<\/em> was still being maintained by the local population, who viewed the \u2018unknown warrior\u2019 as some kind of a national hero!<\/p>\n<p>Patton sheepishly stated at the time that, \u201cI never told them the truth\u201d!<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Vierkant responsief --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3607132294366157\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"5331534427\"\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recognized for his bravery, leadership and tactical skills \u2018Old Blood \u2018n Guts\u2019 has secured\u00a0a well-earned place in the annals of WWII History.
