{"id":704,"date":"2016-09-30T14:57:01","date_gmt":"2016-09-30T14:57:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldwarmedia.com\/?p=704"},"modified":"2017-04-01T12:25:53","modified_gmt":"2017-04-01T12:25:53","slug":"frank-amalfetano-us-navy-landing-craft-tank-287-gold-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldwarmedia.com\/2016\/09\/30\/frank-amalfetano-us-navy-landing-craft-tank-287-gold-beach\/","title":{"rendered":"Frank Amalfetano, US Navy-Landing Craft Tank 287-Gold Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Veteran Frank Amalfetano, US Navy-Landing Craft Tank 287 talks about his experiences on Gold Beach, Normandy!<\/h4>\n<p>War Veteran Frank Amalfetano has been trying to forget the carnage of D-Day for the last 65 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve really tried to erase it from my mind, but the flashbacks just don\u2019t go away,\u201d said Amalfetano.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven after [D-Day], I stayed on the beach of Normandy for three months\u2014June, July and August and there wasn\u2019t a day that went by \u2026 that we didn\u2019t find body parts in the water.\u201d<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When Amalfetano enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 at the age of 17, he and the millions of others who answered the bell for their country had no clue that they\u2019d soon be part of the largest sea borne invasion in the history of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Amalfetano, who most know as the owner of Jennies Ice Cream\u2014a Warwick landmark that was located on West Shore Road\u2014was one of the 85 percent of the troops in that battle that had never seen combat before D-Day.<\/p>\n<p>Trained as a coxswain in the U.S. Navy, he had never even steered a boat before joining the armed forces.
